The Third Attempt
This morning, I sat down at my computer and opened my website. I uploaded some files, tinkered a bit with the backend, hit publish, and began work.
There are some things we do that take so much attention in that moment, but then once they are finished, that’s it. They’re done, out in the world, and out of your brain, freeing up space to focus on other things.
Writing a book is like that. This particular book is one that I sat down to write three times. It was only on the third attempt that the words began to take shape, formulating the subsequent sentences, chapters, and reflections that comprise “Spinal Intelligence.” It’s the first book I have written that isn’t for the movement professional. It’s for the person who is educated, intellectually curious, and tired of trying to figure out which reel on Instagram or TikTok is telling the truth about movement.
I don’t have everything with regards to movement figured out. I still have a lot to learn, but I have spent two and half decades of my life devoted to movement—the practice, the theory, and the teaching. When you are all in on something, you begin to understand some things.
You also notice patterns, learn what’s trending, and get really good at helping people navigate the grey area that is popular information on fitness, movement, and exercise science.
The spine has always fascinated me. So has the nervous system, so it seems fitting that I wrote a book combining the influence of one on the other.
This project has consumed me for the last several months, both the writing and the production because I wanted it to be an interactive experience, just like movement is an interactive experience.
Only time will tell whether I succeeded, but if you want to check out either the ebook or the paperback, they are available on my website. (They will be available everywhere else soon, including Amazon.)
Thank you for reading, and thank you for being here. My experiences writing books have taught me that I can do hard things and I can catapult my understanding of something when I really take the time to think, write, and implement.
Warmly,
Jenn
